The Federal Government has started serious efforts to grow and modernise Nigeria’s herbal medicine sector. This was revealed by Dr Obi Adigwe, Director-General of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD), in Abuja.
He said a ministerial committee has been set up to lead the development and commercialisation of phytomedicines—plant-based remedies used by over 70% of Nigerians. NIPRD will lead the process. Dr Adigwe praised the government for finally taking real action after years of neglect. He noted that Nigeria could follow the steps of countries like China and India, which have utilised herbal medicine to enhance health and stimulate their economies. He also called on wealthy Nigerians to support scientific research, not just handouts. The initiative will involve universities, drug manufacturers, and traditional healers. NIPRD has launched a public questionnaire on its website to gather input from every Nigerian who uses herbal remedies, such as ‘agbo’ or ‘ogwu igbo’, in the process
