The Federal Government has promised to fight harder to stop child labour in Nigeria. Speaking at the 2025 Children’s Conference in Abuja, Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Mohammad Dingyadi, said every child deserves to be in school, safe, and free to dream. The minister said no child should be carrying heavy loads or working on farms instead of learning and playing. He urged parents, communities, and groups like the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to join the campaign.
Dingyadi praised a new report showing a global drop in child labour cases from 160 million to 138 million, saying Nigeria is part of that progress. ILO’s Dr Vanessa Phala warned that though numbers have improved, more must be done to stop unsafe child labour. NLC President Joe Ajaero also urged all states to enforce the Child Rights Act and ensure that all children receive free education.
