Adebusuyi Adeniran, a professor of Migration and Development Sociology at Obafemi Awolowo University, has called for the reformation of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to strengthen its structure and responsibilities.
Delivering the university’s 407th inaugural lecture, Mr Adeniran said the NIS must evolve into a more functional institution serving as Nigeria’s flagship for border security and migration management.
He proposed renaming the agency to the Nigeria Migration and Border Service or Nigeria Migration and Border Security to reflect its expanded roles in policy implementation, border control and migration data management.
Adeniran also urged the inclusion of migration studies in school curricula from primary to tertiary levels to build awareness and policy literacy among young Nigerians.
He emphasised that migration should be developed into an economic industry, similar to countries like Sri Lanka and the Philippines, where emigration contributes significantly to national income. The professor further called for streamlining overlapping government agencies managing migration and establishing migration clinics across all 774 local governments to counsel and monitor potential migrants.
