Federal Polytechnic Rector Faces Governing Council Probe

The Governing Council of Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, Bayelsa State, has launched an investigation into alleged breaches of the Polytechnic Act by Rector, Dr Adegoke Agbabiaka.

In a letter signed by Council Chairman, Dr Ohawale Adebisi, a five-member panel led by Mr. Akpan Aniekan was set up to review petitions from the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU). The unions accuse the Rector of legal and administrative misconduct. The panel will examine the causes of the ongoing crisis between the Rector and staff, and make recommendations before August 13.

The school has been shut since July 11 following protests by workers demanding the Rector’s removal, insisting it is the only way to restore industrial harmony. Union leaders praised the Governing Council for acting to save the institution, while the school’s spokesperson did not respond to calls or messages.
