Nigeria’s automotive regulator is partnering with the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) to set up an electric vehicle (EV) charging station and a compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion hub on the university campus.
The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) stated that the project would promote greener transportation and provide practical training opportunities for students and staff.
The collaboration was announced during a visit by a NADDC delegation led by Father Ibrahim, who represented Director-General Oluwemimo Joseph Osanipin. He said the initiative was part of efforts to prepare Nigeria for cleaner mobility and strengthen research and innovation in the automotive sector.
FULafia Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, described the facility as a potential “industrial training hub” for the university community. He said that departments, including the Public-Private Partnership Unit and the Physical Planning Directorate, had been directed to allocate land for the project. The university said the move aligned with its policy of building partnerships to expand research and technical training.
The charging station and CNG hub are expected to support Nigeria’s transition towards sustainable energy in the transport sector and develop local expertise in emerging automotive technologies.
