Students of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) have started night patrols to protect themselves from constant robbery attacks. The Student Union Government (SUG) stated that robbers have been targeting off-campus hostels, particularly during the school holidays.
According to SUG President Olamilekan Michael, armed robbers have attacked hostels twice within a week, stealing phones and other valuables. Some students on Industrial Training (IT) and others still living off-campus were affected. The SUG stated that the police are trying to help, but are understaffed. Students say the robbers usually come with guns and cutlasses, even destroying windows to gain access.
In response, the union launched a “Self-Policing Initiative” and called on brave students to join midnight patrols to protect their communities. They have also reported the attacks to security agencies and requested a more robust police presence. The union expressed sadness over the trauma students are facing and urged everyone to remain vigilant.
