Some of the guests at FUOYE’s Faculty of Communication and Media Studies maiden International Conference
The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti has held its maiden international conference, signalling its ambition to shape Africa’s development through knowledge and innovation.
At the event themed “Navigating Change: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Communication, Society, and Development in Africa,” Dean Prof. Chika Azogwa positioned the young faculty as a rising force committed to transformative scholarship.
She said the conference marked the faculty’s shift “from infancy to impact,” noting its rapid progress since its establishment two years ago, including initiatives on media entrepreneurship and partnerships to deepen data and AI literacy.
Azogwa stressed that communication must now drive societal transformation and empower communities, adding that Africa must reclaim its narratives in a fast-changing technological environment.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Tajudeen Opoola commended the faculty’s growth. It announced ongoing efforts to expand staffing and infrastructure, including the construction of a new faculty complex.
Keynote speaker Prof. Nosa Owens-Ibie highlighted artificial intelligence as a disruptive force, warning that institutions must urgently adapt to remain competitive.
The conference closed with a commitment to collaborative research, policy engagement and innovative communication strategies to advance Africa’s development agenda.
