The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has received N1 billion from the Federal Government to expand its commercial farming operations under the 2025 Special Intervention Programme for Agricultural Commercial Farms.
The approval, conveyed by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, followed President Bola Tinubu’s endorsement of the intervention budget aimed at strengthening research-based agriculture and boosting national food security.
FUTA Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adenike Oladiji, commended the President for the support, describing it as a major boost to the university’s agricultural innovation drive.
“This allocation is a further testament to FUTA’s relevance in tackling food insecurity. We will ensure the fund is judiciously used to enhance productivity,” she said.
Oladiji highlighted ongoing projects, including expanded vegetable cultivation, doubling palm plantation capacity, and the construction of new greenhouses.
FUTA’s Teaching and Research Farm recently developed F1 species of bell pepper and tomatoes with superior yield, pest resistance, and shelf life, key outputs of its drive to link research with practical agriculture.
