For many undergraduates at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), mathematics is a dreaded course that often shapes academic outcomes. Nevertheless, one student, Samuel Oyedokun, has turned his passion for the subject into a support system for his peers.
Oyedokun, a self-described mathematics enthusiast, launched Boot Class three years ago to help fellow students master compulsory courses such as MTS 102 (Introductory Calculus). What began as a small study group has grown into the Marathon Revision Class (MRC), an intensive tutorial series that draws hundreds of participants.
The 2025 edition attracted both first-year students preparing for MTS 102 and 300-level students facing the tougher MTS 316 (Engineering Mathematics II). Sessions focus on simplifying complex concepts and building student confidence.
Oyedokun said his aim was not only to teach formulas but to “help students discover their math personality, understand how they learn best, and build lasting confidence.” He admitted the classes were “physically demanding and mentally stretching,” but described the experience as rewarding.
The initiative has now become a staple of FUTA’s academic calendar, offering struggling students hope in a course many fear.
