Girls aspiring to enter engineering have been urged to seize opportunities in science and technology as the Mayen Adetiba Technical Boot Camp opened in Lagos.
The sixth edition of the camp, held at Yaba College of Technology and co-sponsored by the ANOH Gas Processing Company (AGPC) and the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), brought together dozens of students for practical training in green technologies. Engr. Effiong Okon, Managing Director of AGPC, told the participants that engineering was about “solving complex problems” and called on young women to step forward. “The future is in your hands. The world urgently needs more young people in STEM, and I am particularly pleased to see more girls taking up engineering,” he said.
Students will design and build a solar‑ and wind-powered house during the camp, a project organisers say, that demonstrates how renewable energy can drive sustainable communities. Okon warned that Nigeria’s fast-growing population would intensify demand for energy and resources, stressing the need for innovation in renewable solutions. “If you stay focused, you can surpass today’s engineers,” he told the students.
