Telecoms firm Globacom has marked this year’s International Day of the Girl Child with a new competition aimed at encouraging girls to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Through its charity arm, Glo Foundation, the company has unveiled the “Glo Innov8” National STEM Competition for Girls in Senior Secondary Schools, with prizes worth N5 million.
“This is our modest way of celebrating and encouraging the girl child to focus more on STEM subjects and pursue careers in these areas in the future to become problem solvers for the country,” the foundation said in a statement.
The school with the best project will receive N2 million, while its two representatives will each get a laptop. The teacher or mentor will also be awarded N200,000. Prizes will also be awarded to the second and third-placed schools.
According to the foundation, the initiative is designed to inspire young girls to “compete, innovate and win,” while boosting their confidence in STEM. Entries opened on September 15 and will close on October 5.
