The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has launched a play-based learning programme to make science fun and inspire more young girls to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The Lagos edition of the initiative, tagged FunSTEM 2.0: Delivering Sustainable Change, was held at Girls Senior High School, Iyana Ipaja, with support from the Worley Foundation.
APWEN President Dr Adebisi Osim stated that the project aims to break down gender barriers in STEM education while promoting innovation and hands-on learning. STEM subjects are gateways to problem-solving and building a sustainable future. Events like FunSTEM are vital to ensure young women embrace these fields with confidence,” she noted.
The programme engaged 160 female students from 13 schools, 50 teachers, and APWEN members. Highlights included workshops on renewable energy, digital engagement, and waste-to-art creativity, with practical demonstrations on solar and wind energy, as well as turning waste into jewellery and household items.
