The Development Research and Project Centre (dRPC) has awarded a ₦5 million grant to the Rising Hope Girls’ Educational Foundation to establish digital laboratories in ten underserved communities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The initiative aims to narrow the digital divide and provide young girls with access to modern educational tools. The labs, equipped with computers, whiteboards, and internet connectivity, will serve as hubs for student learning and teacher training.
Speaking at the launch of a digital lab at Junior Secondary School, Chikakore, Kubwa, Dr Judith-Ann Walker, Executive Director of dRPC, highlighted the impact of funding cuts from international donors, including USAID, on local NGOs. “Supporting local initiatives is crucial to ensure children in underserved areas have equal access to education,” she said.
Project Director David Ahanor added that the programme has already trained over 150 teachers in AI literacy and safe school practices, reached more than 500 students with digital skills, and engaged 400 community members in campaigns against bullying and sexual harassment.
The initiative will also provide scholarships to 100 girls, with 20 beneficiaries in each community school, reinforcing efforts to empower young learners and strengthen digital education across the FCT.
