Renowned historian Professor Toyin Falola has urged the Nigerian government to increase financial and regulatory support for private universities, thereby enhancing their contributions to national development. At Wednesday’s inaugural Founders’ Public Lecture at Atiba University, Falola highlighted the pivotal role of these institutions in Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
Despite their importance, private universities face significant challenges, including financial constraints, limited government backing, and strict regulations. Falola emphasised that these universities struggle to improve infrastructure, expand research capabilities, and contribute fully to Nigeria’s economic growth without governmental support.
“Private universities are critical to alleviating the pressure on public institutions,” Falola stated, urging the government to offer research grants, low-interest loans, and tax incentives to encourage growth and innovation. He argued that these institutions should not be left to operate independently without assistance, as they are integral to addressing the country’s educational and economic needs.
Falola also called for a review of the regulations imposed on private universities, noting that some bureaucratic procedures hinder their expansion. He suggested simplifying the accreditation process and creating economic zones specifically for educational purposes, providing private universities with affordable land, tax breaks, and other resources needed for growth.
Additionally, he emphasised the importance of public-private partnerships (PPPS) in making private education more accessible. With many Nigerians unable to afford high tuition fees, Falola advocated for collaborative efforts between the government and businesses to fund education through scholarships and student loans.
