COREN inducts 53 graduate engineers at Gregory University, Uturu
The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has inducted 53 graduate engineers from Gregory University, Uturu, in Abia State, at the institution’s first induction and oath-taking ceremony.
The COREN President, Prof Sadiq Abubakar, said the growth in the number of universities offering engineering programmes had made adherence to global standards and structured mentorship more critical. Nigeria now has more than 114 universities running engineering courses, he noted.
Represented at the event by Eugene Iroakazi, Prof Abubakar outlined COREN’s 12-point regulatory framework, which governs engineering education from admission to licensing. The framework includes compulsory industrial training, continuous professional development and annual renewal of practising licences.
He also called for closer collaboration between universities and industry to address skills gaps and prepare young engineers for emerging challenges.
The professional oath was administered by the COREN Registrar, Prof. Okorie Austin Uche, who urged the graduates to undergo professional mentorship as a pathway to completing their registration. Represented by Victor Ihediwa, chairman of COREN’s Abia State Technical Committee, he warned against unprofessional conduct.
The Vice-Chancellor of Gregory University, Prof Cele Njoku, and the Dean of Engineering, Prof Joseph Udonne, said the university would continue to uphold high academic and professional standards.
Miss Ogan Sharon Tamunodiepiriye, a Chemical Engineering graduate with a CGPA of 4.80, emerged as the best graduating student.
