Igbinedion Staff Retreats for Reflection

Igbinedion University, Okada, gathered top management and council members on Thursday, November 6 2025, for its seventh Governing Council retreat aimed at strengthening academic standards, innovation, and institutional sustainability.

The one-day event, themed “Driving Excellence Through a Dynamic Academic Landscape: Translating University Vision, Mission, and Objectives to Measurable Outcomes,” brought together members of the Governing Council, provosts, deans, directors, and other key officials to review policies and chart new directions for the university.

Founder and Chancellor, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, represented by Deputy Chancellor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, urged the Council to maintain accountability, discipline, and strategic leadership in steering the institution’s next phase of growth.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lawrence Ezemonye, described the retreat as a platform for institutional reflection and forward planning, noting that aligning academic goals with measurable results was crucial to sustaining progress.

Delivering the keynote address virtually, Mr Kyari Abba Bukar, Chairman of SUNU Assurances Plc, called for measurable outcomes in governance and performance. “A vision without measurement is hallucination; a mission without measurement is wishful thinking; and objectives without outcomes are empty promises,” he said.
Bukar emphasised the importance of Nigerian universities producing entrepreneurial, globally competitive graduates through enhanced digital literacy, a strong faculty, and innovative learning systems.

Speakers, including Dr Aisha Laruba Abdullahi and Professor Chinedum Peace Babalola, highlighted the importance of international collaborations, research investment, and synergy between management and the Governing Council.

Financial sustainability featured prominently, as Professor Olufemi Balogun warned against over-reliance on tuition fees and urged diversification through endowment funds, alumni support, and research commercialisation.

The retreat ended with a renewed commitment to collaboration between the Governing Council and management. Participants, including Pro-Chancellor Professor Ahmed Tijani Mora and Deputy Chairman Dr Charles Uwensuyi-Edosomwan (SAN), received certificates of participation symbolising their pledge to strengthen governance and academic excellence.
