India is set to open a new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Nigeria, its first in West Africa and second in Africa, following the launch of the Zanzibar branch in 2023.
Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, confirmed the development after meeting with the Indian High Commissioner, Abhishek Singh, in Abuja. The campus will be located at the Federal Government Academy, Suleja, which will be upgraded into a “centre of excellence” for science and technology.
The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” to boost innovation and human capital development. According to Alausa, the IIT campus will provide world-class educational opportunities for Nigerian students and strengthen Nigeria’s position in global technological advancements.
Singh noted that the Nigeria branch will replicate the IIT Madras model in Zanzibar, with India providing academic leadership and Nigeria supplying infrastructure. The campus will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering, technology and research, with classes expected to begin in 2026.
