Rafat Salami, late treasurer, International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria
The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has announced a new annual prize at the University of Abuja in memory of its late treasurer, Rafat Salami.
The organisation disclosed the initiative on Friday, noting that the award will promote the core values Salami embodied throughout her career. IPI Nigeria President, Musikilu Mojeed, announced the move at the opening of the 2025 IPI Nigeria Conference and AGM in Abuja.
Salami, who served as Assistant Director of Digital Media at the Voice of Nigeria, died on December 20, 2024, shortly after the Institute’s first annual conference. Despite her failing health, she attended the event and actively supported logistical operations.
Mojeed said her dedication reflected the deeper ethos of journalism. He led participants, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, in a minute of silence.
He noted that Salami, a University of Abuja alumna, lived by the principles of integrity, courage, and selfless service. The Institute intends to pass those values on to emerging journalists through the new prize.
Before her death, Salami had built a distinguished career at VON, rising from News Editor to Assistant Director of Digital Media.
