A Nigerian-born consultant surgeon based in Ireland, Mr Emmanuel Eguare, has donated a range of medical equipment and consumables to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) to support healthcare delivery.
Mr Eguare, a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon and Clinical Director at NAAS General Hospital, Ireland, said the gesture was aimed at easing the challenges faced by doctors due to shortages of essential medical supplies.
Speaking during the presentation in Benin on Tuesday, the Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons commended UBTH medical personnel for their dedication and resilience in delivering quality care despite limited resources.
He pledged continued partnership with the hospital, adding that the donation marked the beginning of a long-term collaboration. “The hospital is close to my heart. We can do a lot together and must embrace virtual platforms to strengthen our partnership,” he said.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Stanley Okugbo, expressed appreciation for the donation, describing it as a boost to patient care. The supplies include laparoscopic consumables, airway masks, surgical clamps, biopsy punches, sutures, monitoring kits, and other essential medical instruments.
