UBTH Gets ₦2.5bn Boost for Children’s Centre

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) is set for a significant transformation after the Edo State Government approved ₦2.5 billion for a new world-class paediatric centre.

The project, secured by the hospital’s new Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, comes just a week into her tenure. For over 52 years, UBTH had consistently struggled with poor infrastructure and limited funding, making this support a historic breakthrough.

Teaching hospitals in Nigeria often suffer from underfunding, leaving brilliant doctors to work under challenging conditions. But breakthroughs like the LUTH Cancer Centre in Lagos as we as the Geriatric Centre at UCH, Ibadan, have shown that bold leadership can change the story.

The planned paediatric centre at UBTH will provide specialised care for children, boost the hospital’s reputation, and inspire confidence among patients and staff. More than a building, it represents a strong commitment to giving Nigerian children the quality healthcare they deserve.
