The Kaduna State Government plans to produce approximately 32,000 skilled graduates annually through its newly established Institute of Vocational Training and Skills Development.
Commissioned by President Bola Tinubu in June, the institute has campuses in Rigachikun, Soba and Samaru Kataf, equipped with modern facilities for practical training across 14 accredited trades. Courses include masonry, plumbing, welding, solar installation, mechatronics, ICT, catering and fashion design.
Programmes are delivered under the Nigeria Skills Qualification Framework, with 80% of training devoted to hands-on practice in workshops and workplace settings. Courses range from three-month unit certificates to year-long qualifications up to Level 4.
Kaduna State Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, stated that the initiative was designed to address manpower needs in the construction, energy, ICT, hospitality, and creative sectors. “Graduates will not only find jobs but also become entrepreneurs and employers of labour,” he said.
Provost of the institute, Husaini Haruna Muhammad, stated that the approach would ensure the production of graduates who are workplace-ready. “With 80% practical exposure, learners gain real-life competencies that are globally competitive,” he said, urging women, persons with disabilities and vulnerable youths to take part.
The institute, accredited by the National Board for Technical Education, has already enrolled its pioneer intake of 2,000 learners. It expects to graduate 16,000 in its first phase before reaching the annual target of 32,000.
