Kaduna State University (KASU) students are voicing their concerns over the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), describing it as unnecessary and harmful to their education.
Under the banner of Concerned Kaduna State Students, the students called on Governor Uba Sani to intervene and address the issues that led to the strike.
In a statement released on May 7, 2025, by their Public Relations Officer, Yunus Haruna, the students expressed disappointment at the support the strike had received from some student leaders.
Haruna criticised these leaders for backing a strike that he claimed only hurt students and argued that the lecturers were fighting for legitimate rights that should be honoured.
The strike, which has disrupted academic activities at KASU, stems from the government’s failure to fulfil agreements made with the lecturers.
These include unresolved salary issues, such as unpaid wages from May to September 2022 and the non-payment of earned academic allowances dating back to 2016.
Other grievances involve unpaid promotion arrears, pension funds from 2009 to 2019, and the non-implementation of promised benefits like group life assurance.
Haruna called on the government to urgently address these issues and prevent further disruption to student education.
He also appealed to civil society organisations to pressure the government to prioritise the welfare of lecturers and the future of students.
As the strike continues, students are urging the government to take immediate action to end the crisis and ensure that quality education is maintained in the state. They added that education was a fundamental right, and protecting the integrity of educational institutions should be a top priority for the government.
