Department of Geography at Kaduna State University Hosts GIS @20 Workshop
Sustainability Studies at Kaduna State University marked the GIS @20 2025 celebration with a practical workshop for secondary school students drawn from Rimi College, Success Academy, Uncle Bado School, Nashmir College and GGSS Kabala Costain.
Opening the event, the Head of Department, Dr Asmau Ahmed Mukhtar, urged students to engage fully and provided a brief background on Geographic Information Systems. Senior academics, including Prof J. G. Laah and Prof Bala Dogo, highlighted the growing relevance of GIS skills.
The first session, led by Mr Yakub Yunus Yakub, introduced students to the fundamentals of GIS, its components, and its applications across defence, agriculture, and governance. He also outlined modern trends such as web-based GIS and location services.
Dr Salisu Ibrahim followed with a demonstration on remote sensing, explaining how satellites and sensors support environmental monitoring, disaster management and urban planning.
The final session, conducted by Mal.
Muhammad Lawal Abubakar, featured a hands-on tour of the department’s weather station and meteorological instruments.
A mapping competition concluded the programme, with Uncle Bado School emerging first. Organisers encouraged students to pursue geography and spatial studies as future career paths.
