Businessman and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Engineer Kayode Ojo, has declared that his 2026 Ekiti governorship ambition is driven by the people rather than political godfathers or the Presidency.
Speaking in an interview, Ojo, popularly called EKO by supporters, said the state was at “a turning point” and needed bold, transformative leadership. He described his campaign as a movement to rescue Ekiti from stagnation, waste, and exclusionary politics.
“My decision is not born out of ambition or federal influence. It is a response to the call of Ekiti people who want genuine leadership rooted in service, not self-interest,” he said.
Ojo, who previously contested in 2018 and 2022, outlined three immediate priorities if elected:
- Intelligent Infrastructure: construction of an Ekiti–Lagos Super Highway to boost trade and logistics, and modernisation of rural roads.
- Youth Empowerment: creation of jobs through a Public Works Corps and tech incubation hubs.
- Education Renewal: classroom digitisation, vocational centres, and upgraded school facilities.
On allegations that his candidacy is backed by Aso Rock to weaken Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who is seeking re-election, Ojo dismissed the claims as “political fiction,” adding that “My only sponsor is the will of Ekiti people. I contested before without federal backing, and this is no different.”
