The Kwara State branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed disappointment over what it described as the state government’s “graveyard silence” on the payment of Teachers’ Specific Allowances (TSA).
In a statement signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Yusuf Wahab Agboola, and Deputy Secretary-General, Mike Modesty, the union said that despite several engagements, the government has failed to address the 27.5% and 21% TSA arrears owed to teachers.
Following a meeting with key stakeholders in Ilorin on Tuesday, the union leadership resolved that, ahead of any formal ultimatum or industrial action, teachers in the state would first observe a day of fasting and prayer to seek divine intervention.
While acknowledging the government’s recent approval of financial backing for the 2024 Teachers’ Service Commission (TESCOM) promotion exercise, the NUT stressed that welfare issues, particularly the TSA, remain critical to motivating teachers and improving productivity in schools.
The union called on its members across the state to remain calm and await further directives from its leadership as it continues to press for the payment of the allowances.
