A local government in Lagos State has launched an initiative to help students overcome the cost of sitting external examinations.
The Chairman of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government, Olalekan Akindipe, said his administration would distribute free General Certificate of Education (GCE) forms to young residents.
He explained that the measure was designed to reduce financial barriers for families and expand access to higher education opportunities. Education authorities say the cost of registration for the examinations often prevents many students from applying, particularly those from low-income households.
“This is a deliberate investment in the dreams of our youth,” Mr Akindipe said while unveiling the scheme. The GCE, conducted by Nigeria’s National Examinations Council (NECO), allows candidates to qualify for admission into universities and other tertiary institutions. Observers note that the intervention comes at a time when rising living costs have put pressure on household spending, including on education.
