The Lagos State Government has emphasised the vital role of coaching in cultivating strong leadership, boosting productivity, and promoting sustainable growth throughout Nigeria.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the remarks while addressing the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Nigeria Chapter’s celebration of International Coaching Week, emphasising the impact of coaching on building effective leaders and resilient institutions.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr Samuel Egube, said that coaching empowers individuals to discover their potential, adapt to challenges, and work collaboratively toward shared goals.
“Coaching is not just about personal growth. It is about strengthening our human capital—the foundation of our state’s economic and social progress,” he stated.
He added that Lagos, often regarded as the nation’s economic hub, is committed to fostering leadership excellence and innovation. “If it works in Lagos, it can work across Nigeria. We see coaching as an indispensable tool in achieving this.”
Reinforcing the message, Akanimo Ekong, President of ICF Nigeria, drew attention to the mindset shift that coaching brings to leadership, particularly in a generationally diverse workforce.
Ekong said that some leaders still resist guidance, especially from younger professionals, but coaching helps them understand that learning is a continuous and necessary process.
He cited tech magnate Bill Gates as a global example, noting that Gates famously said everyone needs a coach, no matter their level of success.
“Coaching does not give you answers—it helps you think more clearly, make better decisions, and build healthier, more dynamic organisations,” Ekong explained.
Now in its tenth year, the ICF Nigeria Chapter has consistently championed the value of professional coaching across various sectors, including business, public service, education, and mental health.
