Lagos State University (LASU) has clarified that only 197 of its 4,095 courses are primarily delivered online, countering reports suggesting a complete shift to virtual learning. The university stated that the move targets large lectures with enrollments exceeding 400 students and forms part of a strategic plan to introduce modern, blended teaching methods.
In a statement, Deputy Registrar Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile said the narrative that students are being told to “stay at home” is misleading. “The vast majority of tutorials, seminars, laboratory practicals, and smaller courses will continue as in-person sessions,” she noted, emphasising that students remain fully engaged on campus with access to libraries, laboratories, sporting facilities, and medical services.
LASU described the online initiative as a data-driven measure to improve learning outcomes and manage large classes effectively, aligning with both international university practices and the National Universities Commission’s push for the integration of e-learning. The university has invested in upgraded campus-wide Wi-Fi, dedicated ICT hubs, and reliable power supply to support the blended learning policy.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello reiterated LASU’s commitment to transparency and innovation in teaching, urging students and parents to seek information through official channels and view the measure as an enhancement, rather than a limitation, to their academic experience.
