Lagos State University (LASU) emerged champions of the maiden UNITECOL Cup on Friday, May 2, 2025, after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over hosts Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) at the YABATECH Sports Complex.
The decisive goal came from tournament standout Elijah Ayeni, who capitalised on a rebound to seal the win.
Throughout the competition, LASU showcased dominance, netting 16 goals without conceding any. Ayeni was instrumental in this, contributing eight goals and earning both the Most Valuable Player and Top Scorer awards.
As champions, LASU received a cash prize of ₦1 million. YABATECH, the runners-up, took home ₦500,000, while Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) secured third place and ₦250,000 after a 1-0 win against the Federal College of Education, Akoka.
The tournament, organised by 54FootballX and sponsored by BAMA under the ‘Nurturing Future Talents’ initiative, also had backing from the Bank of Industry.
It received endorsements from the Lagos State Sports Commission and the Lagos State Football Association.
All participating teams were awarded ₦70,000 each, with semi-finalists receiving an additional ₦100,000. Notable attendees at the final included NPFL champions’ head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, and team captain Nduka Junior.
