Lagos State University (LASU) has directed staff to resume work on Monday after a more than a week-long strike.
In a statement on Friday, the university’s spokesperson, Mrs Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi, said the decision followed an agreement between the Lagos State Government and the Joint Action Committee of staff unions. The dispute centred on the payment of 23 months’ salary arrears from a 25%/35% pay rise introduced in December 2024. The state government has now agreed to settle 12 months of the arrears, nine months to be paid in three instalments from August to October 2025, and the remaining three months to be paid by the university between November 2025 and January 2026.
Deputy Governor Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, who chaired the talks, also pledged to raise with the governor the unions’ demand for a further 20% pay increase promised during the 2023 election campaign. The staff unions have agreed to suspend the strike from Monday. LASU’s management thanked staff for their patience and urged them to return to their duties peacefully.
