Lagos State University (LASU) has addressed circulating social media claims suggesting staff involvement in admission racketeering during its 2025/2026 intake.
In a statement, the university emphasised that admissions are strictly merit-based, with priority given to Lagos State indigenes under the 70:30 policy outlined in the Lagos State University Law 2004. Merit admissions cover the highest-scoring candidates, while verified Lagos indigenes receive supplementary offers. LASU urged applicants yet to receive offers to monitor further list releases.
The university, which received over 70,000 JAMB applications this year, noted that fewer than 20% of candidates can be admitted, explaining widespread disappointment. LASU rejected claims that staff can sell admission slots, stressing that only the Vice-Chancellor has the authority to approve admissions. The statement warned applicants to be cautious of fraudulent offers.
LASU stated that allegations of racketeering are taken seriously and encouraged anyone with verifiable evidence to report them via complaints.admissions@lasu.edu.ng. Reported cases will be thoroughly investigated, and disciplinary action will be taken where appropriate.
The university concluded by highlighting its commitment to transparency, fairness, and merit-based selection, describing the high number of applicants as “both a challenge and a sign of progress” for the institution.
