Lagos State University aims to become the premier university in West Africa, capitalising on a surge in demand and improving its global rankings.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello stated that LASU is now the most sought-after university in Nigeria, with over 70,000 first-choice UTME applicants, approximately 20,000 more than the next institution. She added that LASU is the second best public university in Nigeria in the 2024 Times Higher Education rankings and “the most digitally advanced state university” in the country.
“We set up a ranking committee, identified every Times Higher Education metric, and we are intentional about topping the table,” she said, pledging that by the end of her tenure next year, LASU would be number one in West Africa. She credited the rise to industrial harmony, a stable calendar, residential accommodation, safety, and “100 per cent support” from the Visitor, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Enrolment, she noted, has increased from about 3,000 to 13,000 during her tenure.
“LASU is peaceful. Students come in and graduate on time. No one should choose between safety and quality,” she said, adding that her successor should “aim even higher” as the 2025 rankings approach. “We are positive we have moved up the ladder,” she said.
