Learn skills to fight unemployment, lecturer advises graduates

A lecturer at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Dr Vincent Paul, has urged jobless graduates to learn valuable skills to help reduce unemployment in the country.

He advised on Wednesday in Lafia during the inauguration of the university’s Alumni Association National Executive Council and its Trust Fund for Legacy Projects.

Dr Paul said that many white-collar jobs are no longer available, so young people should focus on developing their talents and acquiring skills that can help them earn a living.

He further called on political leaders in the country to support the youth by regularly organising skill acquisition programmes.

This, he said, would enable them to become self-reliant and financially independent, and they would also be able to make meaningful contributions to society’s growth.

“As a Nigerian graduate, it is essential to learn a skill as this will help you to set up your own business and start earning while searching for any job of your choice.

“Skills have made many people employers of labour, so I urge the youths to take advantage of it,” he explained.

He further urged the newly inaugurated Alumni executives of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, to work towards creating positive impacts through sustainable programmes that would pave the way for development.

He advised the executives to utilise the trust fund to undertake legacy projects, support financial sustainability, entrepreneurial initiatives, and a seamless leadership transition that would give hope to the association’s less-advantaged members.

Paul added, “To ensure that an association such as ours achieve any tangible goal, a strong financial base is of utmost importance. As members of NSUK Alumni, we are united, not just by shared memories, but by a shared obligation to preserve our legacy, empower the next generation, and build enduring structures across borders.”

On his part, the newly inaugurated National President of the association, Nuhu Egya, thanked members of the association and the entire university community for their confidence in him to lead and assured them that he would do everything within his power to take the association to greater heights.
