The institute inducts 160 UNIBEN graduates into the lab science profession

The Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology has inducted 160 graduates from the University of Benin into the profession.

The event, which was the 12th oath-taking and induction ceremony, took place on Wednesday at the university’s campus.

Speaking at the ceremony, the acting Director-General of the institute, Paul Oluwafisoye, told the new members that the laboratory is more than just a workplace; it is a place where science thrives and innovation begins. He urged them to take pride in their profession and uphold its values.

He urged the inductees to adhere to the principles of integrity, continuous learning, professional ethics and dedication to national development, adding, “Your growth will depend on the value you bring, your capacity to adapt and your commitment to lifelong development.”

Oluwafisoye also called on the inductees to carry the ideals of Science Laboratory Technology into their workplaces, noting that the country needs bold, skilled and visionary professionals to confront its scientific and development challenges.

He said the course was also designed to produce laboratory scientists with the capacity to design, develop, test, create, and maintain devices, systems, and products that benefit humanity.

While congratulating the inductees, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Edoba Omorogie, said the induction is a remarkable milestone in the lives of the inductees.

The VC, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ekenwan campus, Prof. Buniyamin Ayinde, stated, “Success has been achieved because you have, individually and collectively, applied yourselves to the intensive academic challenge in the course of your study here.

“Therefore, Today, you have been found worthy in learning and character to be inducted into the prestigious profession. You must not rest on your laurels. Instead, this should serve as the springboard from which you should make exploits to the satisfaction of your parents and guardians, the university and the nation.

“I charge you also to adhere strictly to ethical and professional standards, be meticulous in your work, do not cut corners and be our good ambassadors anywhere you find yourself.”

Induction lecturer Prof. Marshall Azeke told the inductees that the training is not only for them but also for the entire country, urging them to use their profession to effect positive change in society.

Delivering a lecture on the topic “Science Laboratory Technology: Catalyst for Industrial Innovation and National Development,” Azeke noted that the inductees should use their training to solve problems while keeping pace with the changes in the profession to become better professionals.

The head of the department, SLT Prof. Emmanuel Oshomoh, urges the inductees to uphold professional ethics, expressing the hope that the oath they take will serve as a guiding principle in their decision-making and leadership wherever they may find themselves.

The Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University, Tunde Imoobe, said that laboratory scientists play a crucial role in scientific research, healthcare, and innovation.
