The LIDISKI project concluded with a close-out event at the Hawthorn Suite in Abuja from December 4-6, 2025, marking the end of a five-year initiative to strengthen surveillance and control of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) and Newcastle Disease (ND) in Nigeria.
Dr Maryam Muhammad, Director/CEO of NVRI Vom, highlighted the project’s impact, including improved disease management, increased vaccine access, and increased income for smallholder farmers. 91 of 92 surveyed reported increased earnings.
The initiative trained 3 MSc and 5 PhD students, 138 community animal health workers, and 34 field veterinarians, while educating over 502,000 farmers in 500 villages on disease prevention and vaccination.
Key achievements include distributing over 3.9 million PPR and 7.7 million ND vaccine doses, installing solar-powered cold chain systems, and generating critical data to support future disease surveillance.
Dr Muhammad thanked partners, emphasising the project’s success as a model of collaboration and urging continued efforts to sustain its systems and impact on Nigeria’s livestock sector.
