The Honourable Minister of State for Defence and Ex-Governor of Zamfara, Bello Matawalle, has received accolades from a coalition of fourteen local civil society organisations for making an extraordinary impact on the State’s education sector.
Matawalle was said to have released funds to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), enabling the State to get a ₦5.5 billion grant. The coalition noted that the funds helped construct 900 new classrooms, fix 375 dilapidated ones, supply 20,830 double and triple-seater desks to pupils, and provide teachers with over 960 tables and chairs.
To improve security and hygiene in the different local government areas of the State, Matawalle fenced 14 schools and constructed 19 VIP latrines and 134 toilets. The ex-governor also facilitated the construction of eight ICT centres to improve digital learning. In a gesture the coalition described as unprecedented, the ex-governor promoted 6,500 teachers and paid their 2019 leave grants. His administration also paid off ₦70 million debt owed to Crescent University, Abeokuta, and Alhikma University, Ilorin, to benefit Zamfara scholarship beneficiaries.
