The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, has urged the use of mathematical modelling to tackle key challenges in Africa. He spoke during the opening of a five-day international conference and advanced workshop on modelling and simulation of complex systems, held at the university’s Postgraduate College. Adebowale noted that issues like poor healthcare, climate change, and inequality can be addressed through the application of mathematical models and simulations, which are no longer just theoretical but now offer real-life solutions.
Also speaking, Professor Ayodele Ogunjuyigbe, Provost of the Postgraduate College, stated that the event aims to bring together experts in mathematics and technology to develop practical research solutions, while helping students build their capacity. Professor Promise Mebine, Director of the National Mathematics Centre, Abuja, added that mathematics plays a vital role in solving global problems such as disease outbreaks and pollution, and should be embraced for Africa’s development.
