The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has reacted with sadness and concern following the killing of a 300-level Computer Science student, Godwin Francis Akpakpan, in an off-campus shooting incident allegedly involving security personnel.
In a statement signed by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Sammy Kpenu, UniPort described the death as shocking and painful. The university management extended its condolences to the late student’s family, friends, and fellow students and assured that investigations were ongoing in collaboration with security agencies. According to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Akpakpan was arrested by men wearing police uniforms during a stop-and-search in Port Harcourt on April 16, 2024. Later, he was shot during a clash between the police and some people dressed in military uniforms.
The Chairman of the NANS Rivers State Joint Campus Council, Comrade Jokiel Gideon Chinonso, condemned the incident and expressed anger over the lack of responsibility shown by security agencies. “None of the agencies involved has accepted responsibility for the bullet that killed Akpakpan,” Chinonso said. “We demand an immediate investigation. If nothing is done, we will take to the streets and shut down all campuses in Rivers State.” He stressed that students are united in their call for justice. “We will not allow our members to be killed without consequences. We demand justice for Godwin and his family.”
In its statement, the university assured that it is working with the authorities to determine the root cause of the matter. “We expect a thorough investigation and proper actions in line with the law,” the university said. The management also urged students to remain calm and refrain from actions that could escalate further tension. It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the safety, dignity, and welfare of all students and staff.
