The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has emphasised the importance of turning research into commercial products to boost Nigeria’s economic growth.
Speaking at the North-Central Sensitisation Programme on the NASENI Research Commercialisation Grant Programme (NRCGP) in Abuja, Executive Vice Chairman Khalil Suleiman Halilu said financial and administrative hurdles often hinder research projects. He called on researchers to leverage the NRCGP to advance viable innovations.
Halilu, represented by NASENI’s Research Director, Professor Abdulmalik Ibrahim Onuwe, highlighted that the grant application process is fully digital and transparent, designed to minimise bureaucratic delays. He encouraged universities and research institutes, including the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) and the National Space Research and Development Agency (NSRDA), to participate actively.
Programme Coordinator Dr Anas Balarabe Yazid outlined the scheme’s objectives, eligibility criteria, and assessment tools. He stressed that projects must be market-viable and aligned with NASENI’s “Creation, Collaboration and Commercialisation” principle, supporting local content and national development goals.
Deputy Director of Planning and Policy Analysis, Joy Elugbe, thanked participants and urged researchers to embrace NASENI’s initiatives as a pathway to innovation-led progress in Nigeria, highlighting the agency’s commitment to bridging the gap between research and practical economic impact.
