NEMA trains staff on nuclear emergency response in Kaduna
The staff of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have received training in nuclear emergency response from the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Kaduna.
Malam Sani Lokoja, NEMA North West Zonal Director, while speaking at a one-day lecture in Kaduna, mentioned that the exercise was designed to improve the agency’s response and readiness for possible nuclear-related occurrences.
The director advised participants to make the most of the training to broaden their knowledge of nuclear hazards. He also discussed the importance of forming a sustainable partnership between NEMA and CERT.
While delivering his lecture at the training, Prof. Yakubu Ibrahim, a nuclear physicist, noted the difference between nuclear emergencies and natural disasters.
Ibrahim noted that gaps in national preparedness for nuclear incidents include insufficient detection equipment, weak inter-agency coordination, low awareness, and inadequate specialised training.
