NEU Students to Study in Malaysia

North-Eastern University (NEU), Gombe, has signed academic partnership agreements with the University of Malaya and the University of Technology Malaysia, paving the way for its students to study in Malaysia under new exchange programmes.

The agreements were finalised during an official visit to Malaysia by NEU’s founder and Pro-Chancellor, Dr Sani Jauro, accompanied by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sani Isyaka.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the university’s Assistant Information Officer, Mukhtar Sani Saulawa, the partnerships aim to strengthen academic, research, and technological cooperation between NEU and the two Malaysian institutions.

Dr Jauro described the collaborations as a significant step towards realising NEU’s global vision of producing graduates equipped for 21st-century challenges.

“These partnerships reflect our vision of becoming a nexus for development — a university that combines academic excellence, innovation, and global collaboration,” he said.
One of the key components of the agreements is a student exchange programme that will allow NEU students to study in Malaysia under a semester-based model, with credits earned abroad fully transferable.

The university said the initiative would expose students to world-class research facilities, global networks, and international learning standards.

“This programme will open global doors for our students, allowing them to study at some of the best universities in Asia while earning credits that strengthen their academic profiles,” Dr Jauro added.

Beyond student mobility, the partnerships will promote staff exchanges, joint research, and innovation projects. Lecturers and researchers from NEU and their Malaysian counterparts will co-teach courses, conduct seminars, and collaborate on research publications and grant applications.

Officials from both the University of Malaya and the University of Technology Malaysia commended NEU’s commitment to global collaboration, describing the move as a forward-thinking approach to advancing higher education in Africa.

With the new partnerships, NEU joins a growing number of Nigerian universities that have established international linkages. The university has already established collaborations with the University of Surrey (UK), the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (UK), Misr University for Science and Technology (Egypt), Pharos University (Egypt), and the Tiger Eye Foundation (Ghana).
