The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has launched a partnership with the Innovation Centre for Leadership and Entrepreneurial Development (ICLED) to train more than 140 students in workplace and entrepreneurial skills.
The initiative, unveiled at the UNILAG–ICLED Career Services Programme on Tuesday, is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry needs.
Speaking at the event on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Development Services, Professor Afolabi Lesi, said the programme would focus on soft skills such as interview preparation, teamwork and leadership, which are often missing from academic curricula.
“One of the challenges now is that people are getting degrees but are not employable because they lack certain soft skills,” he said. “What the Vice-Chancellor wants is to ensure that every student, both undergraduate and postgraduate, is work-ready.”
Lesi added that the programme also seeks to encourage students to develop innovative ideas for tackling unemployment, positioning them not only as job seekers but as job creators.
Students will participate in an ideas contest aimed at producing practical solutions to Nigeria’s unemployment challenge.
