New Tensions at Taraba College Over Promotion Issues

New problems have started at the College of Education in Zing, Taraba State, as staff are complaining about unfair promotions.

Both teaching and non-teaching staff claim that many workers who deserve promotions were overlooked, while others who are not qualified have been promoted. They believe the process was not fair or transparent.

“Even after meeting all the requirements, many of us were not promoted, while some junior staff were. This is unfair,” one staff member said.

This comes just days after the school denied similar complaints, saying they were not true.

Some staff say they have not been promoted since January 2017. At the same time, others have moved up quickly, which they believe is due to favouritism or having influential supporters in the school.

There are also concerns about the recent appointment of a Deputy Bursar. Some staff say the chairman of the governing council had a personal interest in the matter and made decisions that helped his interests.

A source said, “People who should be punished are being rewarded, while hardworking staff like Atta are being left out.”

Staff are now asking the college’s governing council to investigate the matter and address what they consider unfair treatment.

They are also asking the Governor of Taraba State, Dr Agbu Kefas, and the Head of Service, Dr Ahmed Kara, to intervene and ensure that things are done fairly.

In response, the Provost, Professor Ejika Sambo, stated that the school has promoted many staff members during his tenure. He said anyone who met the requirements was promoted, including some who had been waiting for over 20 years.

He added that some staff members had issues that prevented their promotions, but others who qualified were still promoted.

Professor Sambo also stated that people should refrain from hiding their identities when complaining. He believes talking openly is better for solving problems.

Still, many staff are unhappy and say they will not stop speaking up until, in their words, “the right person is put in the right position.”
