NGE Raises Concerns Over Declining Education Standards

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has expressed alarm over deteriorating education standards in the country, alongside worsening economic conditions and rising insecurity.

At its Standing Committee meeting in Owerri on August 15 2025, the Guild highlighted challenges, including high inflation, unemployment, poverty, and the effects of rising fuel prices and exchange rates on ordinary citizens.

In a communiqué signed by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the editors urged the government to intervene urgently to prevent further decline in education and other sectors. The statement also warned against measures that could restrict press freedom, calling on authorities to safeguard media independence and strengthen social safety nets for vulnerable communities.

The NGE stressed that without immediate and sustained action, the combined pressures of economic hardship, insecurity, and weakened education could deepen social inequalities and threaten national development.
