A Nigerian researcher, Abayomi Ayoola Oladejo, is gaining international attention for pioneering the use of data analytics and predictive modelling to improve safety on construction sites around the world.
Oladejo, a PhD candidate at the University of Colorado Boulder and research assistant with the Construction Safety Research Alliance (CSRA), is developing models that help construction firms anticipate and prevent accidents before they occur.
His work focuses on identifying how last-minute changes on worksites affect crews’ ability to recognise and manage risks. Using large datasets from construction projects, he analyses patterns that could predict unsafe conditions, allowing for early interventions.
Oladejo said his passion for construction safety was born in Nigeria, where he witnessed several fatal site accidents. A graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology and the University of Ibadan, he now works with significant infrastructure and utility firms in the United States to test safety interventions and improve hazard anticipation.
In 2025, he was awarded the McLaren Futures Family Fellowship for his contributions to construction research. He also serves as Chair of the Student Affairs Committee for the American Society of Civil Engineers in Colorado.
Oladejo said he hopes to adapt his findings for use in Africa, advocating for simple, low-cost safety measures to reduce workplace deaths and injuries in the construction industry.
