As Nigeria marked World Literacy Day 2025, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) urged Nigerians to see reading and writing as key tools for building a stronger, more united country.
Speaking at the event, NOA’s Director General, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said literacy is not just about going to school. It is instrumental to fighting poverty, encourages lifelong learning, and brings people together, no matter their background.
He expressed concern about the plight of many communities in Nigeria that still lack good access roads, adding that this can hinder education, particularly for the less affluent.
Mallam Issa-Onilu called on all the parents, teachers, community leaders, and government officials to work together in promoting reading habits. He also encouraged Nigerians of all ages, including children, youth, and adults, to read regularly.
He added that public and community libraries require better support, as they are vital places for acquiring knowledge and learning how to be responsible citizens. Literacy, he said, is everyone’s duty.
