Northwestern Launches Institute to Fast-Track Medical Technologies

Northwestern University is launching the Querrey-Simpson Institute for Translational Engineering for Advanced Medical Systems (QSI-TEAMS) to accelerate the translation of breakthrough research into treatments and devices that improve patient care. The institute is funded by a $29 million philanthropic gift from Trustee Kimberly K. Querrey.


QSI-TEAMS will help researchers identify clinical needs, refine technologies for clinical workflows, and conduct scaled studies to bridge laboratory discoveries with real-world applications. The institute will support the Querrey Simpson Institute for Bioelectronics and other Northwestern centres, enabling faster adoption of transformative medical innovations.


John A. Rogers, the Louis Simpson and Kimberly Querrey Professor, will lead QSI-TEAMS. Rogers highlighted that the institute will reduce barriers to clinical deployment, foster collaboration with healthcare partners, and provide students with hands-on translational experience.


Since 2016, QSIB affiliates have published 400 papers, filed 150 inventions, secured 60 patents, and founded seven start-ups, generating over $150 million in follow-on funding. QSI-TEAMS will expand this impact, offering fellowships, equipment, and infrastructure across Northwestern’s Chicago and Evanston campuses.


“QSI-TEAMS will unlock new pathways for discovery and ensure that innovations reach patients faster,” said Querrey.
