The National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has given state governments a one-year ultimatum to enforce the new minimum benchmarks for secondary schools.
Dr Iyela Ajayi, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, disclosed this while addressing journalists, expressing that enforcement inspections will follow the ultimatum.
He said, “There must be standards and uniformity. We cannot continue with a situation where students learn under trees or in classrooms without roofs. Those days must end.”
Ajayi added that the National Minimum Standards for Secondary Education were launched in February and that they concern “Benchmarking requirements for all aspects of secondary education.”
According to him, it will help identify the number of teachers in schools, the qualifications they should have, the accepted teacher-student ratio, and the available infrastructure.
