Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, NUC Executive Secretary
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has identified 32 tertiary institutions issuing illegal honourary doctorate degrees.
Following the development, the commission has vowed to sanction the institution and preserve the country’s integrity.
While briefing the press in Abuja, Prof. Abdullahi Ribadu, the commission’s executive secretary, noted that awarding public office holders with honourary doctorate degrees will now be paused until they are out of office.
He added that the tradition of self-nomination for the honourary degree is now prohibited.
The executive secretary mentioned that the commission will approach the National Assembly to pass a bill that makes the wrongful conferment or misuse of the degree illegal.
In addition, he clarified that misusing the title “Doctor” without the required qualifications constitutes false representation and is punishable under Nigerian fraud-related laws.
