The National Universities Commission (NUC) has formally notified Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed about accreditation challenges at Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), formerly Bauchi State University, Gadau.
The commission’s recent assessment revealed several deficiencies in the university’s academic programmes, particularly in Public Administration, which still requires significant improvements despite scoring 88.07%.
The NUC’s evaluation highlighted issues such as outdated curricula lacking innovative courses, ineffective internal quality assurance mechanisms, inadequate staff development programmes, poorly maintained classroom equipment, and insufficient library resources.
These shortcomings have raised concerns about the university’s ability to provide quality education and meet national academic standards.
In response to these challenges, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Bauchi Zone has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating conditions at SAZU.
The union cited the absence of a pension scheme, non-payment of earned academic allowances exceeding ₦650 million since 2012, and the resignation of over 30 PhD holders due to poor staff welfare.
ASUU has called on the state government to declare a state of emergency at the university to address these pressing issues.
Amid these concerns, the Bauchi State Government has taken steps to improve the university’s infrastructure and academic offerings.
Governor Bala Mohammed has increased the university’s monthly allocation and initiated the construction of five major access roads within the Gadau campus.
More so, the university has introduced new programmes, including top-up degrees and professional certificates, to enhance academic and career opportunities for students.
Furthermore, SAZU has received a $95,000 grant from international organisations to support its Centre for Law and Religion Studies, aiming to promote scholarship and dialogue in this field.
Despite these efforts, the university’s management acknowledges the need for continued improvements to meet accreditation standards and provide a conducive learning environment.
The NUC has recommended that SAZU enrich its curriculum with innovative courses, enhance staff development programmes, and upgrade its facilities to align with national academic benchmarks.
